This term in Grade 3, our Unit of Inquiry is all about “My Story, My Culture.” We’ve been exploring the central idea that everyone has a unique story that makes them special. Through this unit, students have been inquiring into how personal traits, family traditions, and cultural backgrounds shape who we are. From learning about inherited and environmental traits to discussing family values and comparing different types of families, the children have been making thoughtful connections between themselves and others. One of the highlights has been interviewing family members to understand how childhood experiences have changed across generations. This has helped students gain new perspectives and become more open-minded and empathetic.
In English, we’ve been focusing on writing recounts, linking closely to our UOI theme. The children have been learning how to organise events in sequence, use time connectives, and add sensory details to bring their personal stories to life. They’ve enjoyed planning and drafting recounts about special memories, family experiences, and moments that reflect their identity. Writing with purpose and voice has helped them share their stories in meaningful and powerful ways.
In Maths, we’ve been building our understanding of place value. Students have learned how to read, write, compare, and order numbers up to 10,000. They’ve also explored how to round numbers to the nearest 10, 100, and 1,000. These skills have been taught through hands-on tasks, puzzles, and problem-solving challenges. We even linked our maths to our UOI by creating “Numbers About Me” posters that used place value to tell part of our personal story!
It’s been an exciting and reflective journey so far, and we look forward to continuing to learn more about ourselves and each other as the unit progresses.
