Inside Grade 1: Learning, Fun, and All-Round Growth

In our Grade 1 classrooms, students have been busy strengthening their literacy skills through daily reading and writing activities. We’ve been exploring a variety of books together, focusing on reading with expression and using picture clues to help with comprehension. During writing time, students are working on forming complete sentences, using capital letters and punctuation. We have also introduced new tricky words—words that don’t follow regular phonics rules—and students are practicing reading and spelling them through games, chants, and writing activities. These words are helping students become more confident, fluent readers and writers.

In math, our current focus is on place value. Students are learning how numbers are made up of tens and ones. They have been exploring ways to represent numbers using base-ten blocks, number lines, drawings, and tens frames. We’ve also been using real-world objects like pencils and counters to bundle groups of ten, helping students visualize how numbers work. Through hands-on activities and group discussions, students are beginning to understand the patterns in our number system and apply their knowledge to solve simple problems.

As part of our unit on Healthy Living, students have been learning how to make responsible choices for their well-being. We’ve explored the different food groups and discussed what makes a balanced meal. Students created their own healthy plates and talked about favorite nutritious foods. We also looked at healthy habits such as regular exercise, getting enough sleep, staying clean, and having time to rest and play. Students reflected on their daily routines and shared ways they can take care of their bodies and minds. This unit supports students in becoming more aware of how their choices impact their health and encourages them to build lifelong healthy habits.
